AI classes for kids: a child trains a computer to tell rock, paper and scissors apart

Educifly’s AI classes for kids are live, one-to-one online classes for ages 9 to 17, for families anywhere in the world. Kids learn how AI works by making things with it: apps that spot pictures, games that react to sounds, and later AI projects in Python. They build something in every class. The first class is free.

What do kids learn in an AI class?

A good AI class teaches kids how AI learns, how to build with it, and how to check it. Many children already use AI. Few know how it works or when to trust it.

What your child learns

That AI makes mistakes, and how to spot them

Many kids only ever do the first row. Our AI classes are built on the second and third. A “model” is the part of an AI that has learned from examples. In class, your child makes their own.

In practice, that means your child learns things like:

  • How a computer “learns” from examples, just like they do.

  • Why an AI trained on 10 photos makes more mistakes than one trained on 100.

  • How AI can be unfair if its examples are one-sided.

  • How to use AI chat tools well, once they’re old enough, without letting them do the work.

AI classes by age: what your child will make

Kids aged 9 to 11 make games that react to pictures and sounds. At 11 to 13, they train and test their own models. Teens make AI projects in Python and learn to use AI chat tools well. These are the AI levels on the Educifly pathway, and each one has 12 projects.

Educifly AI levels by age: Level 3 from age 9, Level 6 from 11, Levels 10 and 11 for teens

Level 3: AI Discoverers

9–11 (Grades 4–6)

Tools: PictoBlox, Machine Learning for Kids

What they make, for example: Apps and games that react to pictures, words or sounds the child trained

Level 6: Machine Learning Explorers

11–13 (Grades 6–8)

Tools: Teachable Machine, Machine Learning for Kids

What they make, for example: Their own models, like a rock, paper, scissors spotter, then tests to find its mistakes

Level 10: AI Engineers

14–17 (Grades 9–12)

Tools: Python with OpenCV and scikit-learn

What they make, for example: AI projects written in real Python code

Level 11: Generative AI Creators

13–17 (Grades 8–12)

Tools: Leading AI chat tools, Hugging Face

What they make, for example: Projects that use AI chat tools well, plus how to spot deepfakes

Ages are only a guide. The mentor places your child by what they can do. You can see all 13 levels on one page. Between the AI levels, kids also build Android apps, websites and Python games, so the AI work has real coding behind it.

Is your child younger than 9? They start with Scratch coding classes first. The step-by-step thinking they learn there makes AI much easier later.

What happens in an AI class?

Each class is one hour, live in Educifly’s own online classroom, with just your child and their mentor. Your child builds and tests something with AI, and the mentor coaches. A Level 6 project, over a class or two, can go like this:

A child’s AI model showing its right and wrong guesses on new photos

1

Pick the project. Today, a computer that tells rock, paper and scissors apart.

2

Collect examples. Your child takes photos of each hand shape with the webcam.

3

Train it. They feed the photos to the tool and the computer learns the patterns.

4

Test it. They try hands it has never seen. It gets most right, and some wrong.

5

Find out why. Bad light? Too few photos? They fix it and test again.

6

Use it. They can then plug the model into a game.

The mentor asks questions and coaches. They don’t do it for your child. So by the end, your child can explain how their model works and where it still slips up.

Is AI safe for kids to learn?

Yes, when an adult picks the tools and teaches kids to check what AI tells them. The risk isn’t learning about AI. It’s using it alone, too young, without knowing it can be wrong.

This is how we keep it safe:

  • Age-right tools. ChatGPT’s own rules say users must be at least 13, and under-18s need a parent’s permission. Some other chat tools set 18. On our pathway, AI chat tools come in at Level 11, for ages 13 and up. Before that, kids train their own small models in learning tools like Teachable Machine and Machine Learning for Kids.

  • Online safety first. From Level 0, kids learn what’s safe to share online and why.

  • Honest work. Mentors coach, and your child does the work. Mentors don’t let AI do the project for them.

Level 11 also covers deepfakes, telling real from fake, and why passing off AI’s work as your own is cheating.

Does my child need to know coding before an AI class?

No, not for the first AI level. Level 3 uses drag-and-drop blocks, so your child doesn’t type code. If your child has never coded at all, the mentor may start them a level or two earlier. That way the AI part makes sense when they get there.

For Level 10, your child needs Python first. They learn it in our Python classes for kids (Levels 8 and 9).

Is there a free AI course for kids?

Yes. Free tools like Teachable Machine and Machine Learning for Kids teach AI basics, but they aren’t live courses with a teacher.

Good free options are:

  • Teachable Machine from Google. Kids train a computer to spot pictures, sounds or body poses, with no coding.

  • Machine Learning for Kids. Kids train a model on words, pictures, numbers or sounds, then use it in Scratch.

  • Scratch. Free block coding, made at MIT and now run by the nonprofit Scratch Foundation. A great first step before AI.

We use some of these same tools in class. What a class adds is a person. A mentor explains why the model got it wrong and gives your child a plan. They also make sure your child finishes something every week. If your child is happy exploring alone, start with the free tools. If they get stuck or lose interest, that’s when a mentor helps.

How to choose the best AI course for kids

The best AI course for your child is one where they build with AI and learn to check it. Ask these six questions about any course, ours included:

  1. Does my child make something with AI, not just watch videos about it?

  2. Does it teach them to check AI’s answers and find its mistakes?

  3. Are the tools right for their age? ChatGPT, for example, is for 13 and up.

  4. Is it live, with one teacher who stays with your child?

  5. Can I see the price before I pay?

  6. Is there a free trial class?

For Educifly, the answer to all six is yes.

Who are these AI classes for?

Educifly’s AI classes are for kids aged 9 to 17, from total beginners to teens building a portfolio.

The game lover, 9 to 11

They love games. Now they make one that reacts to their voice or a hand sign.

The AI user, 11 to 13

They already ask AI for answers. Now they learn how it works, and why it’s sometimes wrong.

The teen with big plans, 13 to 17

They want real AI projects in Python for their portfolio and university applications.

The total beginner

Never coded? That’s fine. The mentor starts them at the right level.

Not the right fit if you want a weekend camp, a group class, or a course your child does alone with videos.

Questions parents ask about AI classes

What is the best AI course for kids?

The best AI course for kids is live and matched to your child’s age. It has them build with AI and test it. Look for one teacher who stays with your child, a clear price, and a free trial. Educifly’s AI classes are one-to-one and project-based, with the price shown before you pay.

What age can kids start learning AI?

Kids can start AI at about 9, with drag-and-drop tools. On the Educifly pathway, AI starts at Level 3 (ages 9 to 11). Younger children start with Scratch first, which builds the thinking AI needs.

Is there an AI tutor for kids?

There are AI tutor apps, but they can miss when a child is confused or bored. Educifly gives your child a human mentor who teaches them how AI works. Your child learns to use AI as a tool, not to let it do the work.

Can my child use ChatGPT in class?

Only from age 13. ChatGPT’s rules say users must be at least 13, and under-18s need a parent’s permission. On our pathway, AI chat tools come in at Level 11, for ages 13 and up. Younger children train their own small models instead.

How long are the AI classes, and how often?

Each class is one hour, live and one-to-one, once or twice a week. Most children finish a level in 10 to 20 classes. You pay per class, and you can stop after any pack.

How do I prepare my child for AI?

Teach them to ask how AI got its answer, and to check it. Let them build something with AI, not just chat with it. A class helps because a mentor can explain mistakes as they happen.

Will AI classes help at school?

They should. Kids practise breaking problems into steps, spotting patterns and checking their own work. Those skills help in maths and science. Older students also build a portfolio of real projects.

What do we need at home?

A laptop or computer with a webcam and a steady internet connection.

What if it’s not working for us?

If the mentor isn’t the right fit, tell us and we’ll match your child with a new one, free. You’re never locked in. You can stop after any pack.
